The Art Of Calibration

Happy August! How is everyone doing this summer? Here in Arizona, we have gotten rain and seasonal conditions that resemble an actual monsoon season. I am sending love and well wishes to all of those that have been affected by the weather patterns of floods and fires. Friends, this climate stuff cannot be ignored. We desperately need to make big changes now that should have been made decades ago. It has been tragic to watch how nature has been attempting to pivot and adapt to the mess we humans have created.

This brings me to the topic of my August newsletter. For the past several months, I have had the word calibrate on my mind. Calibration is something that we do all the time naturally. Our bodies are constantly calibrating without us even being aware of it. For example, if you were to stand with your feet right next to each other and close your eyes, you would feel your body shifting to the right and left, perhaps a bit forward and back. The body is naturally programmed to find balance.

Or breath, for example, is dominant in either the right or the left nostril. It shifts from the right hemisphere to the left about every 90 minutes bringing balance to the brain. The regular practice of alternate nostril breathing can help to balance the hemispheres of the brain consciously. This is a practice I recommend doing daily. Here is a recorded audio practice for you, click here.

Last October, a mug slipped from my fingers while I was getting my morning hot lemon water. It fell, shattered, and a piece of the ceramic sliced the inside of my ankle, cutting into the ligament. It was a very deep cut and required an incredibly long time to heal. I was forced to get off my feet and slow down my typically active life for a bit. It has been an interesting journey of healing. I am still teaching myself how to balance again on my right leg. I certainly feel my body working harder to calibrate on that side. Yoga postures I had easily done for years I have had to relearn in my body.

It is a wonderful lesson on non-attachment and has heightened my awareness of calibration in other areas of my life. If we consider the dosha’s of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, they are always in flux depending on several different influences. The weather, time of day, our state of mind, what we have perceived through the sense organs, or even the environment.

The way that we avoid an imbalance is to be aware of the constant shifting and moving of the dosha. If we can learn how to be able to pivot and adjust the breath, mindset, or even the body position to avoid getting stuck in a thought process action that is not serving us.

The art of calibration includes regular activities that help us to remain present. Maybe it is a regular yoga practice, breathwork or mediation. It might be a hobby that increases devotion. Or possibly consciously connecting with nature. We want to implement practices to help nourish, replenish, and restore the tissues of our body. This will have a direct effect on our mind and emotions.

Mantra will literally shift our organism and affect the prana moving through the channels of the mind and body. Sound vibrations can be very healing.

Any practice of concentration, meditation, and devotion will develop equanimity and stability of the mind. Developing a stable mind will allow intentional and automatic calibrations to be more fluid. A gift of a stable mind-body connection is the foundation to shift and adjust more easily.

I am happy to walk with you on your journey of recalibration. Let me know if you are interested in scheduling a consultation.
